Seven days ago, we were wondering how Slimbridge would react to a poor and uncharacteristic display during their loss to Longlevens. At the end of this week, with their third successive win in seven days, they have more than answered that question.
Longlevens victory over Roman Glass St. George today saw the Swans leapfrog their rivals, and lead them at the top of the Hellenic Premier table by a point with three games in hand on the second placed side. Only time will judge how important this week was to the Swans' season in retrospect.
A very scrappy game was decided in the end by two goals from Aaron Evans-Harriot, the second one a penalty. Spike Weaver pulled a goal back for the visitors just after the Slimbridge second, but they held on to record what may turn out to be a priceless victory.
There was very little first half action of note - Toby Soule had a header cleared off the line with ten minutes gone, and Ibby Olateju had a good effort blocked with 23 minutes on the clock, but there were no other real incidents of note.
Ten minutes before the break, Ryan Ponting and Jack W Smith combined in neat move that sent Evans-Harriot through with the Mangotsfield defenders backtracking. His shot, which may have taken a slight deflection evaded the grasp of Mangos Keeper Josh Dempsey to put the home side ahead.
A minute before the break, Alex Bell was unlucky with a great effort that rebounded back into play from the Mangotsfield crossbar, before at the other end, Joe Morton was denied by a superb tackle from Jacob Rodgers, leaving the Swans ahead at the break.
The second half saw a much improved Slimbridge performance - Jack W Smith Smith coaxed a great save from Dempsey with four minutes gone, before Soule's header from Evans-Harriot's Free Kick was just wide.
On 58 minutes, the lead was doubled - Soule played in a superb though ball that was latched on to by Olateju, and as he entered the Mangotsfield box, he was felled from behind by James Sharkey. Although the Referee only penalised him with a yellow card, Sharkey was already on a booking and thus saw red for a second yellow, putting the visitors down to ten men.
The resulting penalty saw Evans-Harriot drill the ball home to put Slimbridge two goals to the good.
The lead was reduced almost immediately, with Spike Weaver turning and scoring for Mangotsfield after a scramble in the Slimbridge box.
As the game progressed into the final stages, Slimbridge had the better chances to add to their tally. Jack W Smith was unlucky with an effort just wide on 68 minutes, before a superb Rodgers clearance saw Raiyan Ahmed's effort blocked as the game entered the last ten minutes.
Ahmed was too high with another effort with five minutes left following good work from Soule, but Slimbridge held on to claim the three points and hoist themselves to the top of the tree.
The Swans are in FA Vase action next Saturday when they entertain Amesbury Town in the Third Round of the FA Vase at Thornhill Park (December 6th, 3.00pm).
