Longlevens vs Slimbridge: Match Report
Monday 22nd September 2025
Slimbridge AFC progressed into the First Round Proper of the FA Vase on Saturday, after a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Longlevens at Saw Mills End.

The game itself was frantic, featuring eight goals, one red card, and ultimately a shoot-out to decide the winner.

Jack Smith scored twice, with Joe Stokes and Jacob Rodgers also on the scoresheet, the latter netting a 94th minute equaliser that forced penalties.

It was the Swans who struck first inside 10 minutes. A Joe Stokes cross unsettled the Longlevens defence, and Jack Smith broke through, dinking his shot over Thomas in the Longlevens goal.

The hosts drew level just after the half-hour mark, when Shiyak Sutherland latched onto a ball through the Swans defence, rounded Stephen Sarkodie and slotted into an empty net.

Half time came with the score level, but that didn't last long. Just three minutes after the restart, Sutherland grabbed his second of the game, rifling in a sweet strike from distance.

Six minutes later, Longlevens extended their lead when Sutherland broke on the counter and squared the ball for Beardsell to tap home.

At 3-1 down, the Swans launched their comeback. With 15 minutes to go, Smith grabbed his second, stretching to capitalise on a loose clearance inside the penalty area.

Just three minutes later the game was back level. A Stokes free kick bounced infront of the Longlevens goalkeeper, who parried it into the back of the net.

Longlevens looked to have snatched it late on, though, when Alex Knight twisted into the six-yard box and powered a shot into the back of the net with eight minutes of the game left.

But there was more drama to come. First, a straight red card was shown to Charlie Hitchings two minutes into injury time. Then, from a late corner, Jacob Rodgers pounced.

His instinctive first-time finish trickling past the goalkeeper to make it 4-4 and send the game to penalties.

In the shoot-out, Joe Hunt saw his opening penalty saved, but Sarkodie immediately denied Longlevens' first effort with a diving stop to his left.

Joe Shutt then smashed Slimbridge's second penalty into the bottom left corner, before Longlevens equalised by finding the top left.

Toby Soule stayed composed to slot into the bottom right, while Longlevens' next taker scuffed his penalty against the post and out.

Jack W. Smith then blazed over, allowing Longlevens to level things up going into the fifth takers.

Joe Stokes was nearly denied, but his powerful strike squeezed past the keeper's hand to put the pressure back on Longlevens. Their fifth taker rattled the crossbar, sealing Slimbridge's passage into the next round.

The Swans' opponents in the First Round Proper will be confirmed at 1pm tomorrow (Tuesday September 23rd).

Up next, the first team return to league action at Thornhill Park tomorrow night (Tuesday September 23rd), kicking off against Westfields at 19:45.

The Slimbridge 18s are also in action tomorrow night (Tuesday September 23rd), as they travel to face Ledbury Town U18s in the league.

After their recent FA Youth Cup win over Taunton Town U18s, the young Swans will face Mangotsfield U18s in the next round, with the tie set to be played on Monday, September 29.
