Slimbridge advanced to the 2nd round of the GFA Challenge Trophy with victory over Lydney Town this evening, after a stubborn Lydney side made the first half difficult for the hosts. However, a goal seconds before the break, and then a second just after half time put the Swans in control and two more goals saw the tie comprehensively won by the home side.
The best early chance for Slimbridge came in the 12th minute, when Jacob Rodgers was through on goal, but Lydney Keeper Tom Way made a good stop.
Four minutes later Callum Dark hit the Lydney post with a good effort, and it seemed as if the opening goal was inevitable, but it remained elusive for Slimbridge.
As the game headed into the break, the opening goal came in messy fashion, when Way fumbled a Sergio Mills corner, and Ryan Ponting was on hand to bundle the ball home with seconds before the half time whistle.
The second goal came just as quickly as the second half started, when straight from the Kick Off, a long ball was dinked over Way by Callum Dark to double the home sides advantage.
Further goals from Sergio Mills, and a stoppage time twice taken penalty by Joe McKayle secured what was in the end a comfortable win for the Swans.
