Slimbridge 5-2 Corsham Town
Sunday 10th November 2024
A dominant display at Thornhill Park saw Slimbridge demolish Corsham Town, with five different scorers pitching in on a day when they bossed the game from the start.

On a day when a beautifully played 'Last Post' preceded the pre-game Remembrance weekend minute's silence, the memorial wreath was not even back in the clubhouse before the home side were ahead.

In their first proper attack of the game, Jack Smith was allowed far too much space on the edge of the Corsham box as he broke forward, and he drilled the ball past Corsham Keeper Louis Smith to put the Swans ahead.

It was all Slimbridge early on, and on 14 minutes, Josiah McKayle, making the second of his impressive performances for the side, was off target with a header from Jonty Welch's corner.

A couple of minutes later though, the lead was doubled - McKayle tried his luck from outside the Corsham penalty area, and the ball eluded Smith's dive and nestled in the back of the net for McKayle's first goal for the club.

After Jack Smith was just off target following a block to Rhys Sarson's effort, the 21st minutes saw the third Slimbridge goal - Joe Hunt's free kick bobbled around the Corsham box before Theo Clayson, with a neat turn and shot, provided another good finish.

With their first real attack of the game just after the half hour mark, Corsham pulled a goal back when Devanti McInerey made a run down the right flank and beat two defenders before sliding the ball past Olly Phillips to make it 3-1.

It was a rare attack though, and five minutes later, Slimbridge had their fourth, when Sarson shrugged off a weak challenge to beat Smith again at his near post.

As the game approached the half, Smith (twice), Clayson and McKayle all went close, but it remained a three goal lead after the first period.

As was to be expected, Corsham came out of the blocks for the second period, and were immediately rewarded when Joe Davis steered the ball past Phillips after a corner had been cleared to him to reduce the deficit again.

A ten minute period of pressure from the visitors, which saw Davis send his effort too high, before Brandon Oputeri's effort cannoned off the Slimbridge bar was about as good as it got for Corsham, before the game settled into a holding pattern for the final period of the game.

Five minutes from time, Callum Dark put the icing on the cake from the home side's point of view with the fifth, to end a very pleasing afternoon for the home side.

The Swans host Lydney Town in the GFA Challenge Trophy on Tuesday (12th November, 7.45pm). They then travel to Brimscombe and Thrupp next Saturday (16th November, 3.00pm) for. Hellenic League clash.
