Slimbridge progressed into the Semi Final of the UHL Challenge Cup with a confident display at Stonehouse Town yesterday. They will meet either Droitwich Spa or Fairford Town at Thornhill Park on Saturday March 7th at Thornhill Park. (3.00pm)
An early goal from Joe Shutt put the Swans on the offensive, and goals just before and after Half Time from Joe Stokes and Ollie Barnes put the game away.
A stoppage time goal from Dan Gayner was a mere consolation for the home side, although they forced Steve Sarkodie in the Slimbridge goal to produce a couple of quality stops to prevent the score being closer.
Slimbridge started on the front foot, and Jack W Smith's neat pass saw Bogdan Mara off target in the early exchanges, before Shutt and Jack W Smith set up Jacob Rodgers, who again was off target with his effort.
On nine minutes though, the deadlock was broken - Rodgers' cross from the Slimbridge left flank reached Shutt at the far post, and he headed the ball past Weimar Dinnall to put the Swans ahead.
Stonehouse's best effort of the first period came on 36 minutes, when Josh Beadle's long range effort brought a doos save from Sarkodie, tipping the ball over the crossbar.
Five minutes later, Slimbridge had an opportunity to double their lead, when Jamol Dare went through the back of Rodgers in the Stonehouse box, and Referee Alan Robinson awarded the visitors a spot kick.
Dinnall guessed the right way and parried Shutt's penalty back out to him, and Shutt's second effort was too high, leaving the game still a one score affair.
Almost immediately after the restart, Shutt more than made amends for his miss, when his goal bound effort was blocked outside the Stonehouse box, and the ball rebounded out to Joe Stokes, who drilled an unstoppable rocket past Dinnall to double the Slimbridge lead.
Stonehouse as was to be expected came out of the blocks at the start of the second period, and Dan Garner was denied by Sarkodie early on when he was through on goal.
On 53 minutes though, Slimbridge notched their third - Mara found Jack W Smith on the Slimbridge right, and his cross was bundled over the line by a combination of Ollie Barnes and backpedalling defender Lee Keveren.
The third goal understandably took the wind out of the Stonehouse side, who to their credit, never gave up the battle.
Ex Swan Dean Turner was off target with an effort on 73 minutes, and Sarkodie made another good stop from a long range effort as the game crept towards stoppage time, tipping the ball onto the bar and seeing it go over.
In the second additional minute, a quick break saw Gayner notch a consolation goal for the home side, but Slimbridge played out time for a deserved victory.
