Slimbridge advanced to the Fourth Round of the FA Vase with a hard fought victory against Amesbury Town this afternoon. This represents only the second time in the club's history they have advanced to this stage, where they will face a trip to Wiltshire to meet Downton FC on January 17th. Their previous fourth round appearance came during the 2006-2007 Season when they reached the fifth round, before losing to eventual winners Truro.
A solitary goal from Joey Shutt was enough to clinch the tie, although on another day, another couple of goals could have been recorded.
Amesbury had set their stall out to play a physical game, and it took a while for the game to settle into any kind of rhythm.
With seven minutes on the clock, a concerted Slimbridge attack saw Jack Smith, Aaron Evans-Harriot and then Kian Kang all have efforts blocked, while on the quarter hour, a Joe Shutt Free Kick was headed just off target by Ryan Ponting.
Amesbury had a couple of chances shortly afterwards, but Ben Morris saw his long range effort easily saved by Steve Sarkodie, before the same player was off target after a quick break down the Slimbridge left.
On 25 minutes, another Ponting header from a corner was just off target, before Evans-Harriot brought a great save from Amesbury Keeper Mike Horne from close range.
The decisive goal came on 37 minutes - Tris Haswell sent a looping ball into the Amesbury box, and the back pedalling Horne parried the ball back into play, where Shutt finished off easily with the empty goal at his mercy.
Slimbridge played far the better football in the second period, and were subject to some robust challenges from the visitors which resulted in a string of yellow cards from Referee Nathaniel Wormleighton.
Two moves early in the half, both involving Toby Soule playing in Shutt, saw Shutt's efforts gathered by Horne and then just off target.
The second period developed into a bad tempered affair as Amesbury continued to make some robust challenges on the Slimbridge players, with no real flow to the game.
With 15 minutes remaining, Evans-Harriot saw his effort deflected wide, before his resulting corner came back into play off the Amesbury Post, but Slimbridge maintained their self control and didn't rise to the provocation, seeing out the rest of the game to record a memorable victory.
