The Swans continued their promising start to the season with a victory over Cinderford Town at Thornhill Park last night. The win sees them in second place currently in the Hellenic League Premier table, although obviously, this counts for nothing at this early stage of the season.
Goals in each half from Casey Collins and Raiyan Ahmed saw the Swans home, with another battling display in crippling heat. Massive respect is due to Referee Keith Simpson and his officiating crew for the way that they managed the conditions with water breaks, ensuring that everyone involved in the game completed it safely.
Slimbridge made the better start and, after Casey Collins' good effort was ruled offside, Jack W Smith had a shot saved by former Swans Keeper Lewis Adams with 12 minutes on the clock.
At the other end, Lewis Powell went close for Cinderford with their first effort on target with 25 minutes gone, but saw his effort rebound out off the woodwork.
Five minutes later, the deadlock was broken - Joe Stokes corner was headed home by Collins after he was left unmarked at the far post to put Slimbridge into the lead.
In a half of few real chances, Slimbridge had one more before the break - Jack W Smith was just off target on 38 minutes, before Cinderford saw a Dale Evans free kick saved by Swans Keeper Steven Sarkodie, before Cinderford's Joe Cattermole saw his free kick timed at 45+3 clatter into the Slimbridge wall to leave the hosts ahead at the break.
An injury to Kian Kang saw him replaced by Raiyan Ahmed, and the Swans had the best of the early second half exchanges - Jack W Smith's cross on 51 minutes saw no-one to meet it in the box, while Collins, Jack W Smith and Stokes all saw good efforts not rewarded, while Cinderford's Cattermole scuffed a great opportunity wide on 62 minutes as Slimbridge maintained their lead.
On 65 minutes, the Swans doubled their advantage - Sarkodie's laser point free kick set Ahmed running, and despite being tackled with both players falling to the ground, Ahmed was up quickest and then beat two other Cinderford defenders before drilling the ball past Adams in a superb individual contribution.
Again, Slimbridge from there needed to see out the game, and with Jack W Smith going close for the Swans, and then Cattermole again forcing a good save from Sarkodie, it was another strong defensive performance that saw the side ultimately rewarded for their efforts.
Slimbridge are on the road on Saturday to Portishead Town in The FA Cup Preliminary Round (3.00pm) before travelling to Droitwich Spa next Tuesday (19th August, 19.45pm) for their next Hellenic League game.
The Under 18's continue their pre-season preparations as they entertain Swindon Supermarine tomorrow night at Thornhill Park (14th August 19.30pm), and then travel to Mangotfield United on Monday (18th August, 7.30pm).
