Ex Swans Manager Tom Speers arrived at Thornhill Park last night determined to record his first victory against his old Club as part of the Cirencester organisation, and for a long period of time, it looked as if he would get his wish. But a second half that was packed full of incident resulted in what must already be considered the game of the season even though it was the opening day.
There was little in the first period of this game to indicate the drama that would later unfold. In a routine first half under wet and blustery conditions, Harlie Price had given the visitors an early lead in the sixth minute, Ciren Keeper Ronnie Newberry had made some good saves, an early one from Joe Stokes the pick of the bunch, and Price had nearly doubled the advantage with a long range lob that just crept wide, leaving Ciren a goal to the good at the half.
The way the game unfolded in the second period was thrilling and wildly entertaining. The second half lasted for a minute short of an hour, and saw Slimbridge turn round a two goal deficit to claim the points.
Ten minutes into the second half, the introduction of Casey Collins and Raiyan Ahmed shifted the momentum of the game in the home side's favour and they started to push strongly for an equaliser.
Despite Harlie Price doubling Ciren's advantage on 69 minutes, Slimbridge were creating by far the better chances at this point, but no-one could have predicted what was about to unfold.
With 16 minutes remaining, Finley Bell rugby tackled Toby Soule off the ball and received a straight red card from Referee Alan Robinson.
Seven minutes later, on 81 minutes, after a series of dangerous crosses from the flanks into the Ciren box, Jack W Smith grabbed a goal back, and give the home side some encouragement.
Two minutes later, they were level. Ahmed was causing chaos down the Swans left wing, and his run and cross was turned in by Jack Smith to level things up.
In the first minute of what turned into 14 minutes of stoppage time, Slimbridge completed their comeback when Jack W Smith send another cross into the Ciren box which wasn't cleared, and Casey Collins scrambled the ball home to give Slimbridge the lead.
Collins was unlucky in the eighth minute of stoppage time when his effort came back off the post, and both Managers were booked in the eleventh minute following some handbags in the dugout area.
The final word very nearly went to Jack Smith, but his long range effort in the 12th minute of stoppage time drifted just wide.
The final whistle was met with massive celebrations in the Swans camp, as players, management and fans all celebrated a game that will live long in the memory.
