The Swans arrived at the Secure Meters stadium as massive underdogs against big spending Corsham Town, but a spirited and hardworking display saw them book their place in the next round of the FA Cup courtesy of a 76th minute Casey Collins Goal. The Swans' reward for their win is a trip to Southern League side Portishead Town in the next round on August 16th.
Corsham came out of the blocks early, and, in the first minute, Nick Macootie saw his effort cannon off the Slimbridge post and back into play as the home side pressed.
The first chance for Slimbridge came in the ninth minute, when Joe Hunt's long throw managed to get just too far ahead of Joe Stokes as it came across the Corsham goal.
Slimbridge were forced into an early change when Skipper Charlie Hitchings had to be replaced by Bogdan Mara. One of Mara's earliest involvements came when a clash with Macootie saw the Slimbridge man having to leave the pitch with blood streaming from his nose.
The game had entered a stalemate, but Corsham rarely threatened the Slimbridge goal - the final minutes of the half saw the best efforts yet from the visitors - Raiyan Ahmed's effort was just off target, before Stokes had a good effort deflected for a corner, and Jack Smith saw his effort saved by Ex-Bristol Rovers Keeper Ryan Clarke, leaving the game goalless at the break.
Looking as if they had been told a few home truths at the break, Corsham again came out strongly with Raph Oppong hitting the side netting early on, before Slimbridge against worked their way back into contention.
A well worked free kick routine saw Lewis Gilchrist's effort off target as the home side pressed, but Ahmed at the other end went close with an effort just wide.
Pele Kouisseque was looking dangerous for the home side, and his run and shot brought a good save from Steve Sarkody to keep the scores level.
As on Tuesday night, it was a substitution that changed the game - Just before the hour mark, Jack W Smith replaced Ahmed, and started causing all sorts of problems down the Slimbridge left flank for his opponents.
Within two minutes, he had placed a dangerous cross into the Corsham box that no-one could reach, before forcing a good save from Clarke when through one-on-one.
Slimbridge were looking more and more dangerous as their through balls disected the Corsham back line, and they thought they should have had a penalty when Collins was played in behind the defence and then brought down from behind, but Referee Kevin Rudd was having none of it and waved the protests away.
It was getting closer and closer for Slimbridge - on 69 minutes, a Stokes free kick cannoned back into play off the Corsham post and was cleared.
Stokes and Jack W Smith were combining well, and it was their interplay that set up the cross that led to the winning goal on 76 minutes. Smith's cross pinged across the Corsham box, Jack Smith's lunge at the ball distracted Clarke, and as the ball bounced back into play off the far post, Collins reacted quickest to drill it home and put the visitors ahead, sparking wild celebrations in the stands.
Slimbridge then needed to stay calm and dig deep to see out the game, but a combination of hard work and wayward passing from the home side saw them easily survive the final 15 minutes and then ten additional minutes of stoppage time, much to the delight of the travelling faithful.
The Swans are back in Hellenic League action on Tuesday when they travel to Fairford Town (7.45pm).
