On Sunday 4th of October Sept Slimbridge U18s hosted St Nicks U18s in the second league game of the season for both sides, on the grass at the Slimbridge Legion.
Despite the heavy rain the pitch was in excellent condition and fortunately for the spectators the weather improved during the course of the afternoon, with the sun making a welcome appearance towards the end of the game.
Slimbridge started the brighter of the two teams and created problems for St Nicks with high balls from corners. Slimbridge went close on a number of occasions from attacking corners before taking the lead with a header from George Driver-Dickerson in the 18th minute. At the other end St Nick's used their skilful midfielders to break on the counter and get their pacey front pair on the ball, creating a number of half chances during the same period.
Slimbridge then went in search of the 2nd goal before halftime and largely controlled the game but were unable to find the final ball to open-up the St Nicks defence. The second half started as much as the first half had ended with Slimbridge controlling the game but with St Nick looking dangerous on the counter attack.
Slimbridge finally got a 2nd goal in the 70th minute when Alfie Bradshaw accepted an early ball from the wing and drove his shot into the top of the net. Going down 2-0 brought the best out of St Nicks and they scored almost immediately with a shot poked in at the post by Jack Powell following a passage of attacking play.
The momentum in the game now shifted and St Nick’s started to get on top and play more of their football in the Slimbridge half, pushing players forward to find the equaliser. At the end of normal time Slimbridge looked like they had hung-on and taken the 3 points but one last effort from St Nicks led to a scramble in the Slimbridge box and George Driver-Dickerson miscued his clearance into the bottom corner of the net for 2-2. This proved to be one of the last kicks of the game.
An excellent game played-out by two footballing sides, played in the right spirit and firmly officiated by the young Referee.
Looking forward to the return game at St Nicks and wish them luck in their forthcoming fixtures.
