On Sunday 27th Sept Slimbridge U18 hosted Rockleaze U18 in their first league game of the season on the grass at the Slimbridge Legion.
Conditions were good and Slimbridge started the game by trying to build from the back and use the flanks to get the ball forward.
Rockleaze looked to take advantage of the breeze behind their backs and play a more direct style, which suited the pace and height in their team.
After the opening exchanges Slimbridge took the lead in the 23rd minute when Jack Riley's cross swung over the head of the keeper and landed in the top corner of the net.
Both sides made good use of the rolling subs to keep fresh legs on the pitch and the first half ended 1-0, with chances missed at both ends.
Rockleaze started the brighter of the two teams after the break and got back on terms in the 58th minute after their striker latched onto a forward pass and lashed his shot high into the net.
The game then ebbed and flowed in a rather scrappy fashion with some moments of quality creating chances for both sides.
A draw looked on the cards until Slimbridge won the ball on the edge of the Rockleaze area and broke into the box with numbers for Josh Vallis Ridler shot to find the net in the 89th minute.
With passions running high following the late goal the game spluttered to a testy but hard fought finish.
A good physical battle played-out by two footballing sides looking to make the most of the large pitch and good conditions.
Looking forward to the return game at Rockleaze and wish them luck in their forthcoming fixtures.
