Slimbridge and Burnham have only met on five occasions, twice in the Southern League in the 2015-16 Season (Slimbridge won both League games 2-0), and now three times in the FA Cup. In 2019, the sides played out two 1-1 draws before the Berkshire club progressed at what was then known as The Gore, but is now the 1878 Stadium on a penalty shoot out.
So it was probably not too much of a surprise that yesterday's game ended up 1-1 again, after an enthralling afternoon's football.
Burnham's return to Thornhill Park on Wednesday (12th August, 7.45pm) for the replay means that the Tuesday Swans Trip to Hartpury (or more accurately Gloucester City at the moment) will be postponed.
Slimbridge made a very sluggish start to their new campaign, and could have been three goals down in the first ten minutes, but great goalkeeping from Ronnie Newberry, denied Gabriel Mota and then Shyon Dennis with great stops, before Kiayan Moore, who looked dangerous all game, sent a tantalising cross into the Swans penalty box that no-one could convert for the home side.
The home side continued to press, and Mota and then Rafael Bertoli were off target as Slimbridge struggled to cope with the quick movement of their opponents.
As the game approached the 30 minute mark, the visitors began to settle, and after Alex Bell was too high, and Jack Smith produced a save from Burnham Keeper Archie Cunningham, the Swans took the lead - a sweet little passing move involving Casey Collins and Joey Stokes, saw Stokes' cross drilled home by Olly Sully, much against the run of play.
The lead was only to last a couple of minutes though, when a mix up at the back saw Rafael Bertoli left with a simple chance to level things up.
As the game approached the break, there was an extraordinary passage of play as Slimbridge attacked, and the Linesman flagged for a penalty for handball as the ball was cleared for a corner. Referee Ben Frape overruled his colleague and awarded a corner. The visiting Management, officials and fans were unimpressed.
The second half saw the Swans a lot more settled, and the game turned into a very entertaining game - Jack Smith and Collins had early efforts just off target, while two great efforts from Moore for the home side saw another great save from Newberry, and the ball cannoning up from the post on the hour mark.
Slimbridge had the better of the latter half chances, with Theo Browne off target, Collins seeing his effort deflected for a corner when through on goal, and Hadyn Evans having a header off target.
In the last ten minutes, Bell had a good effort saved, while Browne saw another header too high, and in stoppage time, Bertoli and Jordan Brown were off target for the hosts, leaving a draw as probably the fairest result.
