Slimbridge Joint Manager Tom Deakin went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure his side’s Pre-season friendly with League Two side Cheltenham Town went ahead yesterday.
With the Thornhill Park pitch starved of water during the recent hot spell, he slept in the Clubhouse at the ground the night before the game, getting up every two hours to move the sprinkler system around the pitch and provide the best possible surface ahead of the big game.
‘We tried to get as much water on the pitch as we could, knowing how dry it had been’, said Deakin after the game. ‘Every couple of hours I got up, moved the sprinklers and went back to sleep. The ground is secluded and in a quiet area, so it was actually very relaxing!’
The game attracted a crowd of just under 500 spectators, and despite the League Two professionals recording a 6-1 Victory, Deakin was very pleased and proud of his team - ‘It was a great day for the club, it makes all the hard graft everyone puts in week after week worth it when we have days like that.
