Match Report: Slimbridge AFC VS Hereford Pegasus
Thursday 30th November 2023
Jack Smith scored his first hat-trick for the first team and George Neill bagged his eighth of the season as the Swans beat Hereford Pegasus 4-2 in Marsh Challenge Cup

Smith opened the scoring with a back post header and Neill pounced on a goalkeeper mistake to double the lead before Jordan Williamson smashed an effort into the top corner from long range for the visitors in an action packed first half.

The second half was much the same with Smith clinically finishing two more chances to claim the match ball, and Pegasus having the final say as Zac Powell netted a consolation goal late on.

The win comes less than a week before Pegasus travel back to Thornhill Park for a Hellenic League game, and means the Swans progress into the next round of the cup.

The away side had the opening chance of the game as Williamson rounded Ben Prictor and crossed into a dangerous position, but the Peggy attacker's shot was hit over.

Neill had the first Slimbridge chance just minutes later as Harrison Reeves' attempted shot found the forward, and after taking a touch Neill's effort was well stopped by Matt Gwynne.

A first save of the game for Gwynne, who went on to have a busy night in net.

The deadlock was broken in the tenth minute as Joe Hunt's accurate cross was nodded in by Smith in front of the home fans.

On his first start since returning to the club, Reeves proved a threat on the attack and almost scored his first for the club, as he curled a shot passed Gwynne and onto the post.

Just before the half hour mark, Neill helped himself to his first goal since the start of the month as a skied back pass was controlled poorly from Gwynne, allowing Neill to get the decisive touch towards goal.

The Pegasus number one would repay his error before the half time whistle blew however, saving a close range effort from Neill and pulling off an impressive double save to keep his side in the game.

The visitors did get one back before the break through Williamson, who smashed his shot past Ellis Parker and into the top corner of the goal.

The two goal lead was restored just 12 minutes into the second half as Neill played Smith in cleverly before the ex-Slimbridge 18's captain dinked his effort over Gwynne and into the net.

Chances continued to flow as the game grew, both sides attacking with intent. But it was Smith who put the game to bed and secured his hat-trick.

An unselfish move from Neill, who beat his marker and put a cross on a plate for Smith for his perfect hat-trick.

The action wasn't over yet though, Powell was alive to fire past Parker just minutes before time, the finish was nothing other than a consolation goal however.

After the game, Swans joint manager Tom Deakin praised a 'confident' performance.

"I thought we controlled the game, a shame that they had the last say, but I thought overall it was a good performance from us.

"Creative attacking and did well defensively considering we are missing a couple as well, very pleased."

On a night where yet another product of the Slimbridge youth system made his first team debut, Deakin highlighted how important it is to give these opportunities to players.

"It's what this club does, it produces young players to come through. We finished on the pitch with Shamar, Smithy, Theo, and Ellis in goal who is an 18's product.

"It shows what we do as a club, it's a positive step forward."

The hat-trick hero of the night also had a few thoughts following the game.

"Good day at the office to be fair. A perfect hat-trick, right foot, left foot, header. Good game."

Up next, the first team visit Westfields for a Hellenic Premier Division clash before Pegasus make the trip back to Thornhill Park on Tuesday night.

The Slimbridge 18's have a short break before they travel to take on Bishops Cleeve Colts in the GFA U18 County Cup on December 10.
