Slimbridge AFC Veterans History Project
Monday 27th November 2023

Slimbridge AFC have launched an appeal for old photographs and memorabilia to compile an online library of club history, dubbed by founder Dave Wherrett as the ‘Slimbridge AFC Veterans History Project’

Dave, who made his first appearance on the pitch for Slimbridge in the 1960’s, following in the footsteps pf his father and grandfather, has worked with Club Officials in an effort to gather rare and previously publicly uncirculated club memorabilia, and build an online library that will stand as a tribute to those who have built the club from it’s humble origins to an established team at their spiritual home of Thornhill Park.

Slimbridge Press Officer Tim Blake said ‘We have noted that we are very low on official records of club history, particularly prior to the year 2000, so when Dave approached us to try and identify some of the material that is undoubtably out there, we leapt at the chance to put our History Project together. Dave has done some fantastic work and already has unearthed team photos from the 1919-20 Season and the 1921-22 Season, which are just amazing, so we are looking to build on that start’

We have already started to identify some of the names of players in the team photos that were in our clubhouse, but we know that there is a lot more out there that we currently don’t have, so we are reaching out to the local community and former players and their families to see what other memorabilia is out there.

Ultimately, all contributions will be loaded onto an online archive at www.slimbridgeafc.co.uk (with all appropriate credits), and, it is important for us to say this -  we are not asking anyone to hand over treasured photos or articles or memorabilia. We are simply asking for the chance to scan or photograph their material and then return it to them, while at the same time building the project database.’

The club are planning a special reunion event prior to a forthcoming home game at Thornhill Park, where everyone who has contributed to the project will have complimentary admission, and hopefully take the opportunity to catch up with some old friends.

We are requesting that anyone who thinks they may have material which will help build our project initially makes contact with Dave Wherrett via email at

Below are the photos we have unearthed of the 1919-20 and 1921-22 Season Teams.
