Slimbridge kicked off their League points total in style yesterday after a late Jack Smith winner stole the points late on at Bickland Park.
The home side had the better of the first period, but could not make their advantage tell, while Slimbridge grew into the game and looked by far the most likely winners in the last twenty minutes of the game.
The early exchanges were mostly incidental, as neither side settled into a routine, but the home side began to exert an influence through Oscar Massey and Oliver Evans, who both posed a threat all afternoon.
Massey was off target on 25 minutes, while Callum Godfrey had to be alert on 32 minutes to save Liam Prynn's effort, before Luke Barner tested Godfrey on a couple of occasions, and Evans rounded the Keeper, only to see his effort cleared off the line, leaving the sides level at the break.
Massey had the first early chance of the second half, but again, Godfrey was up to the task, and Slimbridge began to ease themselves into the game.
Casey Collins had a shot save by Falmouth Keeper Morgan Jones on 63 minutes, before Collins again and then Alex Bell put in dangerous crosses which came to nothing.
With 20 minutes remaining Jack Smith saw an effort blocked, before his cross again came to nothing. By the time the game entered the last 15 minutes, Falmouth were reduced to long range efforts, with Massey well wide with a speculative effort.
Although a draw seemed the likeliest outcome, if anyone was going to nick it, it was going to be the visitors, and Casey Collins' pinpoint through ball set Smith through one on one with Jones, only to balloon his effort over with 7 minutes left.
Undeterred, a minute later, a lovely four man passing move in midfield saw Joe Stokes dink the ball through to Smith, who lobbed Jones and, despite the best efforts of the back-pedalling Keeper, put the ball into the far corner of the net, to spark wild celebrations both on and off the pitch, and clinch a crucial victory.
Slimbridge will be looking to build on their League season now they have got off the mark points wise, with three successive home game games scheduled - at home to Larkhall Athletic on Wednesday (7.45pm), Bristol Manor Farm next Saturday (3.00pm) and then Portland United (Wednesday October 7th, 7.45pm).
Finally, it would be remiss of me not to thank everyone at Falmouth Town for their incredible hospitality and warm welcome, and their fan's applause as our players left the clubhouse to get back on the coach did not go unappreciated. We look forward to welcoming everyone from a brilliant club to Thornhill Park in due course.
The Under 18s are travelling to Clevedon Town on Monday night (7.30pm) in the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Youth Cup, and have a League visit to Fairford Town scheduled for Thursday (7.30pm).
