Slimbridge 3-1 Highworth Town
Tuesday 17th March 2026
Slimbridge moved to the top of the Hellenic Premier League with a late show again proving decisive. Olly Sully had put them ahead early in the second half before Highworth scored an almost immediate equaliser.

However, late goals from Jack W Smith and Shiyak Sutherland saw the Swans triumph and leapfrog Roman Glass St. George into top spot.

It was an incredibly scrappy game with very few incidents of note - after Slimbridge forced two consecutive corners with no result, an effort from Kian Kang which was off target was the sum off attempts on goal in the opening ten minutes.

The game developed into a stalemate, with Shiyak Sutherland being too high on 11 minutes, before he played in Jack W Smith on 19, only to see Smith's effort cleared.

Just after the half hour mark, Jacob Rodgers made a probing run down the Slimbridge left, and was unlucky when an unfortunate bounce turned his intended cross into a shot that was off target.

After picking up a knock, Owen Giles was replaced by Alex Bell before the break, but the interval saw the teams go in level.

There was a quick burst of activity early in the second period - on 51 minutes, a Joe Shutt Free Kick wasn't dealt with by the Highworth defence, and Olly Sully pounced to put the home side ahead.

The lead lasted less than a minute though, and Highworth went straight down the other end and equalised, with Marcel Lewis, who looked dangerous all night, converting a cross to level things up.

The game settled back into its scrappy pattern again, but, as on Saturday against Mangotsfield, when Slimbridge got the ball down and played football, the rewards came.

There was ten minutes left when Charlie Mathews' Free kick was cleared to Jack W Smith on the edge of the Highworth box, and his power drive would still be travelling were it not for the net in the goal, it was struck with such power, leaving Highworth Keeper James Walker with no chance.

Two minutes later, it was game over - Mathews was again involved in a 1-2 with Sutherland, and Shiyak drilled the ball across Walker into the net for the Swans' second, and lifted them to the summit of the League.

Slimbridge are away at Thornbury Town on Saturday in another Hellenic League Fixture.

The Under 18s are back at Thornhill Park on Friday (7.45pm) when they entertain Longlevens Under 18s in the Semi-Final of the HFA Giantkillers Cup. The winners will reach a final to played at Hereford FC's Edgar Street Ground, so there is a big prize on offer for the finalists.
