The Swans notched a late winner at Thornhill Park today with a late goal from Will Hawes, but the win was tainted by a nasty looking head injury to Jacob Rodgers which resulted in a long period of stoppage time at the end of the game.
It was a very uneventful first period – Zac Powell and Owen Taylor were off target early on for Westfields, while Rhys Sarson and the returning Joey Shutt went close for the hosts before half time.
Slimbridge had the better of the second period, without being able to make a breakthrough, and it took a superb double save from Travis Wood to deny Mason Godsall from putting the visitors into the lead with 15 minutes remaining.
In the 87th minute, a sickening and completely unintentional collision between Jacob Rodgers and Westfield’s George Clark saw a lengthy stoppage while the Slimbridge man was treated in front of the dugouts, but he was ok to leave the pitch after finally sitting up, and was then taken to hospital for further examination. Both clubs send all their best wishes to Jacob for a swift and full recovery. After the lengthy stoppage, the game recommenced for the final three minutes, and, following a scramble in the box, Will Hawes drilled home the winning goal in what was the eleventh minute of stoppage time to secure the win for the home side.
The Swans are back at Thornhill Park on Tuesday (21st January, 7.45pm) when they entertain Corsham Town in a Wiseman Floodlit Cup game. They then travel to Sporting Club Inkberrow on Saturday (25th January, 3.00pm) for their next Hellenic League Fixture.
