Club Co-Chairman Colin Gay has announced that he will be switching roles within the club. After stepping down from his position as Co-Chairman, Colin will become Chairman of the Slimbridge Supporters Club, who are working to raise funds for the club. This change means that Barry Gay will once again assume sole Chairmans duties at Thornhill Park.
In a statement to the club's recent AGM, Colin explained his decision.
'Last season was our first season back at Step 5, having spent several tough seasons in the Southern League, and for many of us, last season was a very enjoyable one after many years of struggle, albeit great fun at times, in the higher league.
However, this club clearly belongs in the Southern League and it must be everyone's aim to get us back playing at that level again.
Last season we very nearly achieved that, but the management of this football club knew that we were not financially ready to make such a quick return.
The obvious concern for us in taking the next step is travel costs, with the Southern League now introducing teams from Cornwall with the likes of Mousehole, Helston and Falmouth all joining the League.
So, with that in mind, we must have a plan in place to make sure promotion is financially viable.
My plan is to become Chairman of the newly formed Supporters Club, which since it's formation last year has been a huge success, and it will be my task, along with Natalie Jennings, Lewis Hall and my wife Sharon to raise enough funds to ensure that we are financially able to take the next step forward to Step 4 football whenever that should come.
Between the four of us, we will be working extremely hard to raise these funds and we are hoping that you will support us in our efforts, and any ideas that you may have will be greatly appreciated.
It must be stressed, however, that the football club also needs fundraising events and a push must be made to gain more sponsorship to ensure that the day to day bills can still be met.
Hopefully, with the introduction of Will Hawes as Commercial Manager this will happen, so please give Will as much support as you can when required.
I would like to thank each and every one of you for supporting me in my previous roles. This is a fantastic football club with some amazing people who work so hard on a daily basis to keep us going. Let's continue together as one, and let's all work together to get Slimbridge AFC back to where we belong.'
