Match Report: Slimbridge AFC VS Lydney Town
Sunday 15th October 2023
First half goals from Sam Blackie, Jack Smith and Rudi McKinnon not enough as Lydney Town score five to overcome Slimbridge at Thornhill Park.

Blackie opened his account for the season just four minutes into the game before Marley Thomas missed the opportunity to double the lead for Slimbridge from the penalty spot.

On the half hour mark Lewis Thompson did convert a penalty for the visitors but two well worked team goals finished by Smith and McKinnon had Tom Deakin and Adam Coyle's men go into the break with a 3-1 lead.

However, a second half rout in front of goal for Lydney saw them comeback to win 5-3, with goals from Callum Dark (X2), Aston Jeffs and a Charlie Hitchings own goal.

The first half, which could have had Slimbridge out of sight, started perfectly.

As Elliot Gardner found himself with space down the left side, the forward cut in and with a yard of space took his shot, but having been stopped by Richard Thomas the rebound was bundled in by Blackie.

The chances kept coming for Slimbridge who came close to a second with a McKinnon header sailing just wide following some intricate build-up play between Smith and George Neill.

Just past the 20 minute mark, the Swans were awarded a penalty for a goal-bound shot being blocked with an arm.

However Thomas (Marley) had his attempt saved by Thomas (Richard), denying the penalty taker his fourth of the season.

Punished for the miss, Slimbridge's one goal advantage was temporarily taken away as Lewis Thompson converted a Lydney penalty past Ellis Parker.

The game wasn't level for long, as just five minutes later Smith recorded his fifth goal of the season, tapping in a Neill cross from close range.

One minute into first half stoppage time, the Swans lead was doubled as McKinnon sat Thomas and a Lydney defender down before poking his shot through the shot-stoppers legs and into the back of the net.

In the second half, Slimbridge's first half lead was clinically dismantled by the visitors, who on multiple occasions, found themselves punishing the Swans' missed chances by going down the other end to score.

The first goal in the comeback came in an unfortunate manner, as an attempted clearance from Hitchings looped over Parker into the Slimbridge net.

Following this, well taken goals from Dark (X2) and Jeffs sent the Lydney bench into jubilation as, for just the second time in the league this season, the Gloucestershire side recorded three points away from home.

Joint manager Adam Coyle said he felt 'perplexed' upon reflection of the match.

"Didn't see that coming at half time. We were just saying that we had 35 attempts on goal, they've had six. I think five of their goals has come from us missing a chance and they have broke down the other end and scored.

"Obviously not good enough in terms of the result. Although I thought we looked a really good team in possession, again it's just the final end product. We've got to be clinical, and that today has proved why you need to be clinical, because we have lost three points today."

The result leaves Slimbridge at sixth in the Hellenic League Premier Division table.

The first team aren't back in action until Tuesday October 24th when they face Sporting Club Inkberrow in the Wiseman Lighting Floodlit Cup at Thornhill Park.

As for the Slimbridge U18's, they travel to Lydney Town U18 for their next game on October 25th.

Team: Parker, Thomas, Prictor (Turner 80'), Blackie, Hitchings, Mara, McKinnon, Hands, Gardner (Clayson 72'), Neill, Smith (Mbunga 80').
