The original game between these two sides was halted in the 87th minute after a floodlight fire with Roman Glass two goals to the good, and Slimbridge cannot be blamed for wishing the result had been left to stand after they were clinically taken apart by the visitors again, with Laurent Davis Wilson putting in a game changing performance for the away side. With Ellis Parker, Myron Turner, Sam Blackie, Edji Mbunga and George Neill all on the injured list, Slimbridge had an afternoon to forget.
There was little indication of the drama to come in the early exchanges, and the Swans took the lead on six minutes with an early contender for goal of the season – after Theo Clayson’s cross was deflected for a corner, Rudi McKinnon turned superbly on Dale Evans’ cross, and put a first time volley into the net past Roman Glass Keeper John Dempsey.
Six minutes later, McKinnon was again close, beating two men, but seeing Dempsey save his effort to keep the scores level.
As Roman Glass came back into the game, they began to create some good chances, and Lewis Gilchrist was just off target before Davis Wilson hit the post.
As the pressure grew from the visitors, Gilchrist also his effort come back into play off the Slimbridge woodwork, before missing a good opportunity after a Roman Glass break with 28 minutes on the clock.
A minute later, the visitors were rewarded Davis Wilson made a good run into the heart of the Slimbridge defence, and saw his effort again hit the woodwork, but this time go into the net rather than back into play to level things up.
On 36 minutes, Davis Wilson had a strong appeal for a penalty denied by Referee Albert Warr, before seeing his next effort deflected into the net via a Charlie Hitchings, to record his second goal of the afternoon.
Slimbridge pushed for an equaliser, with Clayson being too high with a header, and Will Hawes and McKinnon both having efforts on goal blocked, but Roman Glass effectively killed the game off in the third minute of first half stoppage time, when a quick break allowed Davis Wilson the opportunity to slide the ball past Lewis Adams and record a first half hat trick.
Roman Glass continued to pile on the agony for the hosts in the second half – Seven minutes in, a Roman Glass attack saw the ball cleared to ex-Swan Rhys Sarson, and he recorded the fourth goal for the visitors.
Four minutes later, it was five – a shot again coming back into play off the Slimbridge post was converted by Charlie Saunders.
Slimbridge were reduced to long range efforts as Roman Glass closed the game out, with McKinnon seeing an 87th minute hit the Roman Glass bar and go over, but the visitors rubbed further salt into the wound in the 94thminute, when Sheo Bennington Mannings converted another breakaway to compound a miserable afternoon for the Swans.
Joint Manager Tom Deakin was honest in his assessment of the afternoon – ‘Ultimately, we weren’t up to it today. We made mistakes we haven’t been making, and we’ve been punished by a very clinical, very good attacking side.
We’ve got to pick ourselves up and work it out for Tuesday. I’d like to think that it’s an anomaly, and it’s now about the character of the squad. We’ve got to watch the footage and go through it all, and take on board what needs changing and working on.
We’ve got to work – we stick together, it’s a group together – when we win, we win, when we lose, we lose and we’ve got to work as a team. We can’t just take the highs, we’ve got to deal with the lows, and today was one of them.
We haven’t got much time to stew on it, and that will suit us – we’ll be ready to go again Tuesday, Mangotsfield is a tough place to go, they are always a good young side that work hard, and then we’re back at Thornhill on Friday for Westfield. It’s the games that suit us – back to back – that’s what seems to work well for us, so hopefully, we turn a corner again today and make it better Tuesday night.’
Slimbridge travel to Cosham Street to meet old rivals Mangotsfield United tomorrow night (7.45pm) before returning to Thornhill Park for another Friday night fixture, when Westfield provide the opposition (8thSeptember 7.45pm)
