Slimbridge 0-2 Frome Town
Saturday 16th April 2022
Frome Town displayed all of the qualities that see them pushing for the automatic promotion spot with a comfortable victory at Thornhill Park. A goal in each half gave the points to the visitors, but the final scoreline could have been greater, as Slimbridge were outclassed by their opponents.

However, with other results going their way, Slimbridge are now mathematically safe from relegation, and remain in 12th Place in the Southern League Division One South.

Slimbridge made a very fast start, and a sweet move in the first minute saw Edji Mbunga play in Will Hawes, and his cross was met in front of goal by Marley Thomas. Frome Keeper James Carey was equal to the task and made a good stop.

Frome settled into the game quickly though, and dominated the first half - On 12 minutes, Matt Smith saw his effort come back into play off the Swans' post, before a superb stop from Lewis Adams denied Smith when he was through one on one with the Slimbridge Keeper.

Smith was just off target with another effort on 24 minutes, as the visitors cranked up the pressure.

Adams then made two superb stops in quick succession from Jonathan Davies and James Ellis.

The inevitable goal came on 34 minutes, when Joe O'Laughlin cut in on the Frome left, and drilled the ball past Adams to put the visitors ahead.

Davies thought he had doubled the lead five minutes before the break, but his effort was ruled out for offside, and the lead remained a single goal at the Half.

The second period followed the same pattern as the first, with Frome dominating the play - Adams made another save from Rex Mannings early on, and Sam Teale had two close efforts, while Davies' effort saw Frome hit the woodwork for the second time in the match on 65 minutes.

Four minutes later, the second goal arrived - Smith picked up the ball on the edge of the Swans box, and placed it past Adams to double the lead.

There was still time for Kane Simpson to go close for Frome, while Slimbridge sub Tyler Jaggers had the Swans' best effort of the game on 83 minutes, but was unlucky to see his effort just off target.

Speaking after the game, Swans Manager Tom Speers was fun of praise for his opponents - 'Credit where credit is due, Frome were superb – what a team, every aspect was covered – they were coached well, they have some great players and were ten times better than they were when we played them at their place and lost to the same score.

I’ll own our mistakes, I went man for man, thinking that if we left three up against their three, we’d be effective against them one on one with our pace, but we weren’t good enough on the ball in the first half, and because of that, we left ourselves open and exposed, and you couldn’t really have argued if it was three or four at half time – Lewis made some really good saves and kept us in the game – but there was too much to change by giving information on the side.

But every time we gave the ball away, they were so good – such intelligent football players, all big, strong, fast, quick, and mentally strong as well. They could see exactly where the space was, and were fantastic in the first half.

Even though we were only one nil down, we had to change our style and sit in deeper, and see if we could hit them on the counter, but we knew if we gave them more space, they would get more chances, and they ran out worthy winners. Dan has done a fantastic job, these are the best coached team I’ve seen.

I’m pleased though that we dug in – it’s now a characteristic that we’ve got – it’s a fundamental part of my philosophy that we play with determination continuously – so we dug in, we worked hard, but they had all the pressure, they had to win, and came up and did it comfortably.'

The Swans' Easter weekend continues tomorrow (Monday 3.00pm), when they make the short trip to Mangotsfield United, who had their relegation confirmed on Saturday after a 4-0 loss to league Leaders Plymouth Parkway.
