Match Report: Slimbridge 0-4 Winchester City
Sunday 5th September 2021
The Swans dominated much of the first 20 minutes of the game but failed to capitalise on the chances they carved out.  Ben Deakin and Adam Price linking up on the right, with Price delivering a cross to the far post where Marley Thomas was lurking only for his shot to sail inches wide.

Moments later a knock down from Jordan Annear staring his first game in a Slimbridge shirt found Johan Flo again his effort was wide.  A Swans free kick on the left was floated into the box to Nathan Dennis, who knocked the ball down to Thomas but his touch was too heavy allowing Harry Birchnall in the Winchester goal to claim.

On 22 minutes the visitors took the lead with their first real attack of the game, Oliver Bailey taking the ball to the right byline and his delicate chip was tapped in by Oliver Balmer waiting at the far post.

Three minutes later Winchester doubled their lead through Robert Flooks header from a free kick.  Slimbridge could have been three down a couple of minutes later when Baileys neat flick found Blamer forcing Lewis Adams to push the shot around the post.

In first half injury time Ben McLean placed his long range shot wide after recovering from a misplaced tackle by Kieran Douglas.

Slimbridge started the second half well, Myron Turner firing directly at Birchnall then Annear heading wide from Deakins cross.  On 55 minutes Thomas cross from the left found Annear in space, his goal bound header was tipped onto the bar by Birchnall and out for a corner.

Flo and Deakin linked up on the right wing and from Flo’s cross Annear shot over the bar.  On the hour, Winchester were reduced to 10 men when the referee produced a straight red card to Flooks for a reckless challenge on Flo.

The sending off did not dampen the visitors spirit as 5 minutes later Max Smith hit a low 30 yard strike past the diving Adams to increase the lead.

In a scrappy last 20 minutes the Swans pushed forward in search of a consolation however with four minutes remaining substitute Greg Peel held off Toby Lawreance’s challenge and as his strike cannoned back off the post Adams clattered into the striker.  The referee pointed to the spot, and it was Peel who stepped up to send Adams the wrong way to give the visitors an easy victory.

Next Saturday the Swans in search of their first victory of the season host Willand Rovers, while the reserves travel to Cheltenham Saracens in the Hellenic League.  On Thursday the Under 18s start their league season with a trip to Longlevens.
